Google a lansat un nou instrument, în cadrul serviciului Google Traducere, care promite să extindă căutarea pe Google dincolo de barierele lingvistice, returnând rezultate în limbi diferite de limba utilizatorului. Astfel, se poate introduce un termen sau o expresie în limba maternă, instrumentul Google îl traduce în limba dorită, lansează căutarea pe baza termenului tradus, returnând rezultate în limba ţintă dorită. Rezultatele sunt apoi traduse automat cu Google Traducere, serviciu renumit pentru traducerile cel puţin amuzante produse. Instrumentul poartă numele de “căutare tradusă” şi este disponibil în limbile oferite de Google Traducere.

Este totuşi interesant de explorat potenţialul instrumentului de căutare bilingvă pentru lingvişti, de exemplu, în validarea terminologiei. Există posibilitatea de a modifica traducerea în limba ţintă a termenului căutat, lansând astfel căutări bilingve pe Google. Din acest punct de vedere, noua funcţie lansată de Google poate fi interesantă pentru traducători. Formatul rezultatelor “căutării traduse” se bazează, în mod evident, pe o aliniere a paginilor indexate de Google în limbile sursă şi ţintă ale căutării. Desigur fiabilitatea rezultatelor depinde direct de disponibilitatea şi de calitatea paginilor de Internet multilingve în domeniul căutării. De exemplu, o căutare tradusă după un termen de sorginte europeană poate produce rezultate bogate, fiabile şi utilizabile, datorită faptului că instituţiile UE menţin peste un milion de pagini web, în cele mai multe cazuri multilingve.

Google pare să fi descoperit de ceva vreme potenţialul lingvistic imens al alinierii spaţiului virtual şi a decis să-l exploateze în diferite forme. Evoluţia şi utilizările date acestei uriaşe memorii de traducere virtuale aflată la dispoziţia Google rămâne un subiect controversat.

Adriana Stoichiţoiu-Ichim, de la Facultatea de Litere,  Universitatea din Bucureşti, publică un studiu intitulat “Influenţa engleză în terminologia politică a Românei actuale”, informează ediţia din 23 ianuarie a buletinului Uniunii Latine “Terminometro”.

Lucrarea tratează ”împrumuturile de origine engleză şi la calcuri după modele englezeşti întâlnite în presa scrisă şi audio-vizuală a ultimului deceniu, cu atenţie specială pentru anii 2001-2003. Alegerea acestei categorii de termeni politici este motivată nu atât prin numărul lor, cât prin frecvenţa  de  utilizare  şi  prin  valorile  semantice  şi  stilistice  dezvoltate  pe  teren  românesc.”

New Brazilian Portuguese Spelling in Effect

“Grammarians estimate that the unified spelling will affect 1.6 percent of the words used in Portugal and 0.5 percent of the words used in Brazil, and that 98 percent of the spelling discrepancies between the two countries will be eliminated once Portugal implements the agreement.”

Salonul Expolangues 2009 a avut loc între 14 și 17 ianuarie 2009 la Pavilionul Paris Expo, având ca invitat de onoare Comisia Europeană. Astfel, se doreşte omagierea celor 27 de țări membre și 23 de limbi. Inițiat pentru a promova învățarea limbilor străine, a plurilingvismului și pentru promovarea schimburilor internaționale, Expolangues este un eveniment unic ce adună, de 26 de ani, cea mai mare parte a actorilor pieței lingvistice. Cu prilejul celei de a 27-a ediții, Leonard Orban, comisarul european pentru multilingvism, invită reprezentanții oficiali ai celor 27 de țări membre ale Uniunii Europene să pună în valoare specificitățile lingvistice și culturale ale țărilor lor.

România a fost reprezentată de Institutul Cultural Român din Paris, care a propus publicului două activități: un curs de limba română susținut de Dan Culcer, filolog specializat în predarea limbii române ca limbă străină, şi un spectacol folcloric intitulat “Cântece și dansuri din folclorul românesc”, dat de asociația Les chants valaques, înfiinţată în 1991 de Marieta Bratu Palaghia, interpretă de muzică populară și romanțe.

Expolanges 2009 a primit 25.200 de vizitatori, dintre care 13.000 de profesionişti ai limbilor, care au vizitat standurile celor peste 200 de expozanţi din 20 de ţări, reprezentând peste 60 de limbi.

Pro Helvetia veut renforcer la présence de la littérature suisse au-delà des frontières linguistiques. La fondation dispose ainsi d’un budget de 200′000 francs pour conclure des contrats avec des maisons d’édition pour assurer la traduction des oeuvres. Ces contrats de prestations portent sur deux ans. Les éditeurs intéressés peuvent déposer leur candidature auprès de Pro Helvetia jusqu’à fin mars. Ils remplacent le système des primes que la fondation a attribuées aux maisons d’édition pendant dix ans. (SWISS TXT)

Tarifarea serviciilor de traducere este un subiect etern, abordat foarte des pe listele şi forumurile pentru traducători, de exemplu în acest fir de discuţie de pe forumul românesc al ProZ.com.

La tradiţionala reţetă “repede şi ieftin”, căutată cu asiduitate de mulţi clienţi, s-a adăugat recent un nou ingredient: criza economică. Astfel, adesea, traducătorul este pus în faţa unor reacţii extreme din partea clienţilor direcţi sau a agenţiilor de traducere. Vă propunem un dialog pe acestă temă între traducător şi contractorul de servicii de traducere (în limba engleză):

What do you do?
- I am a translator.

Oh really? How nice, but I meant what you do FOR A LIVING.
- You mean WORK? I don’t work. I make so much money from my translations that I do not need to work.

Can I have this back within three days? I am really pressed here.
- Sure.

How much will that be?
- USD$ 1500.

Isn’t that too much for a three-day job?
- I can do it in one week if it will make you feel better.

Can I have a discount on that?
- Why?

You make more money than I do!
- You might consider becoming a translator, then.

We have a better quote. Lots of translators are willing to accept the job at more sensible rates, you know.

Because many a time I have used very similar words while talking with a client.
For example:

Client: When I can get the work done cheaper elsewhere, why should I pay you your high rates?
- Me: When I can get my rates paid elsewhere, why should I accept your low rates?

Client: My secreatary used to do this free of cost.
- Me: Then what’s your problem? Give this work to her.

Client: She resigned her job and went to another company for a higher salary, the ungrateful woman.
- Me: (No comment, just smiled knowingly. The client had the grace to smile sheepishly and blush).
